Portable and benchtop spectrophotometers describe form factor—not automatic accuracy, transmission capability, formulation software or suitability for a particular sample. Start with the method; choose the format second.
| Question | Portable may suit | Benchtop may suit |
|---|---|---|
| Where is the sample? | Large, installed or line-side parts that must be measured in place. | Prepared plaques, liquids, powders or standards measured in a controlled location. |
| How is it presented? | Direct contact on usable flat areas with repeatable positioning. | Fixtures, cups or controlled sample handling may be important. |
| What must it do? | Verify geometry, aperture, data workflow and the needed capabilities by model. | Verify the same capabilities; bench mounting alone does not add transmission or formulation. |
Check before buying
Record material, finish, transparency, minimum flat area, required geometry, UV condition, tolerance, existing comparison instruments, software/data requirements and service route. Formulation needs compatible software and material databases; it is not guaranteed by a benchtop instrument. A portable device can be the better choice for a vehicle panel, while a benchtop workflow can be better for controlled samples—but both conclusions depend on the required method.
