Master Standards vs Working Standards in Color QC

The master standard is the protected source of color authority; working standards are verified copies used for routine production decisions.

Quick technical guideMeasurement techniques

A master standard and a working standard should not live the same life. The master is the protected source of color authority. Working standards are controlled copies used for frequent measurements on the production floor. Separating these roles reduces damage and gives the QC system a traceable reference when results drift.

Two standards, two different roles

Feature Master standard Working standard
Purpose Defines the approved color authority. Supports routine production and supplier checks.
Handling Minimal, controlled access. Frequent use under documented handling rules.
Storage Protected environment and packaging. Near the process, but protected from contamination and exposure.
Verification Used to confirm or replace working copies. Compared with the master on a planned schedule.

Build a traceable chain

Give the master a unique ID, product or color reference, revision and approval record. Create working standards from representative material and measure them against the master using the full approved method. Store their initial spectral and color-difference results, the instrument used, date, operator and allowed limits. Every production record should identify which working standard and revision supported the decision.

Set verification frequency from risk

There is no single correct interval. A frequently handled textile swatch, paint panel or plastic plaque may need more frequent review than a stable ceramic tile kept in a case. Consider light sensitivity, contamination, abrasion, temperature, chemical exposure, usage frequency and the cost of a wrong release.

01

Inspect

Check contamination, gloss change, fading, scratches, distortion and backing damage.

02

Measure

Compare master and working pieces with the same instrument, method and conditioning.

03

Trend

Use control limits to detect gradual drift before the working standard becomes misleading.

Do not correct the master to match production

If routine output has shifted, investigate the process. Changing the approved target requires authorised change control, not an informal reassignment of values.

Define replacement and retirement rules

Replace a working standard when it exceeds the agreed difference from the master, shows physical damage or reaches a risk-based service limit. If the master itself is unstable, use retained material, historical spectral data, visual approval and authorised stakeholders to establish a successor with documented continuity.

Start with creating the standard, then connect it to instrument verification and the supplier specification.
