Calibration & Maintenance

How to Calibrate a Spectrophotometer

Learn how to calibrate a spectrophotometer, protect calibration standards and build a dependable color measurement routine.

Quick technical guideCalibration and maintenance

“Calibrate” is often used for several different tasks. For reliable color measurement, separate the instrument’s routine standardisation or adjustment, independent verification and formal calibration—and follow the manufacturer’s procedure for your exact model.

Three different controls

Routine standardisation

The manufacturer-prescribed white/black or zero routine that prepares the instrument for measurement.

Verification

An independent check against an approved reference or check sample to confirm that results remain within the method’s limits.

Formal calibration

A documented relationship to reference standards, performed at the required interval by a competent provider.

A safe generic routine

  1. Allow the instrument to reach the condition required by its manual.
  2. Confirm the correct measurement mode, aperture and reference standard ID.
  3. Clean references only by the approved model-specific method, then complete the manufacturer’s routine.
  4. Measure the approved check sample and record values, date, operator and method.
  5. If a check fails, stop release decisions, inspect the procedure and reference, repeat only as instructed, then seek service if unresolved.

A successful routine does not by itself prove full metrological traceability. Keep the manufacturer manual, service/calibration record and your independent verification evidence together. See why two instruments differ and how to measure color correctly for the next controls.
