Color measurement for paint and coatings is a complete quality-control method, not a single reading. Pigment dispersion, resin, wet-film application, substrate, film build, drying or cure, gloss, texture and measurement geometry can each change the result. A defensible programme defines all of them before a tolerance is used to accept or reject a batch.
Define what the measurement must control
| Quality question | Best specimen direction |
|---|---|
| Is the mixed batch on shade? | A standardised wet sample or, more commonly, a controlled drawdown evaluated after the defined flash-off, dry or cure condition. |
| Will the applied coating match? | A representative cured panel or production part with controlled substrate, film thickness and application process. |
| Is the supplier consistent? | The agreed working standard, measurement method, sampling plan and lot-level acceptance rule. |
| Does the finish look right? | Color plus separate gloss, texture or multi-angle appearance measurements where those attributes matter. |
Control the specimen before the instrument
Use the same substrate color and preparation, applicator or spray process, film build, orientation, flash-off, cure schedule and conditioning time for standard and sample. Measure only after the specified state has been reached. For translucent coatings, backing and substrate become part of the color. For powder coating, cure history, orange peel and film thickness can move both color and appearance.
Do not use a convenient panel as an undefined standard
Approve a stable master, protect it from light and handling, create verified working standards and record the spectral target and revision. A worn or contaminated panel silently moves the process target.
Choose the optical method deliberately
For many solid-color coatings, diffuse/8° geometry supports both SCI and SCE. SCI includes the specular component and reduces the effect of gloss or texture differences, making it useful for formulation and pigment color. SCE excludes the specular component and is more sensitive to the finished appearance. Neither mode is a substitute for a glossmeter. Metallic, pearlescent and other gonio-apparent coatings require a specified multi-angle method because their color changes with viewing angle.
Lock illuminant, observer, color space, color-difference formula, aperture, UV condition and averaging rule. Compare results only when those settings and sample conditions match.
Build a production QC workflow
01
Standardise
Verify the instrument and identify the approved color standard and method revision.
02
Prepare and measure
Make a representative specimen, measure fixed locations and retain individual readings as well as the mean.
03
Decide and trend
Apply the agreed Delta E and component limits, then trend direction and variation before a batch fails.

Match the instrument to the real sample
Portable d/8 instruments such as the SD-500 and SD-700 UV suit many solid-color panels, drawdowns and finished parts. The SD-800B and SD-900B add controlled benchtop presentation, larger apertures and reflectance/transmission capability. Confirm the actual aperture, sample holder, UV need and geometry against your method. Effect finishes need a multi-angle instrument rather than a conventional sphere instrument.

Wet Paint vs Dry Paint Color Measurement
Wet paint readings support rapid batch adjustment, while dry-film readings represent the applied product; the two need separate standards and a validated correlation.

SCI vs SCE for Paint and Coatings
SCI reduces the influence of coating gloss and texture; SCE is more sensitive to finished appearance. Paint specifications must name one condition and use it consistently.
