How to Set Delta E Tolerances for Quality Control

Learn how to set Delta E tolerances for quality control using material, finish, end use and a defined color measurement method.

Quick technical guideColor science

A useful ΔE tolerance is a controlled decision rule for a specific product and method. It is not a universal number such as “ΔE below 1.”

Build the specification before the limit

Name the approved standard, geometry, SCI/SCE condition where relevant, aperture, illuminant, observer, formula and formula parameters, backing/orientation, sampling plan and any component limits. Then determine whether the decision concerns visual acceptability, process capability, measurement-system variation—or all three.

A practical illustrative process

01

Collect approved examples

Include known-good, borderline and rejected samples prepared and measured by the proposed method.

02

Review measurement and visual evidence

Assess the relevant end-use condition and check that instrument variation is small enough for the decision.

03

Approve and control changes

Set the accepted boundary with the customer or quality authority, then use change control for formula or tolerance changes.

Borderline results need a rule

Define repeat measurement, visual review and escalation actions in advance. Operators should not casually override an approved standard.

Keep the detailed record with ΔE fundamentals, formula selection, measurement-system performance and sampling.
