Measuring Laminate and Composite Surfaces

Measure solid, woodgrain, stone-look and composite panels without letting pattern, gloss or protective film obscure the production decision.

Technical guideBuilding Materials

Laminate and composite panels may be solid-colored, printed, woodgrain, stone-look, metallic, embossed or synchronised in texture and pattern. One spot reading can control a uniform décor, but it cannot represent a complex design unless the measurement zones and statistical rule are defined.

Classify the surface and decision

Surface Measurement direction
Solid color Compare representative field areas with a physical or spectral standard using fixed finish and geometry.
Printed wood or stone décor Measure named light, midtone and dark zones or use imaging; one average may hide a wrong component color.
Metallic or pearlescent décor Assess color travel and direction; a multi-angle method may be required.
Fibre, mineral or filled composite Use a large aperture and multiple locations to represent filler and matrix variation.

Prepare the production face

  • Remove protective film and adhesive residue unless the specification explicitly measures through the film.
  • Allow pressed, cured or coated panels to reach the named conditioning state.
  • Clean with an approved non-polishing method and record any sealer or topcoat.
  • Measure the correct décor face and avoid edges, joints and damaged areas unless they are the target.
  • Keep thickness and backing consistent where the surface is not fully opaque.

Control direction, texture and pattern registration

Mark machine, grain and emboss direction. Test 0°/90° rotation during method development to quantify directionality. If embossing is synchronised with print, measure the same named motif zone on standard and sample. Retain the orientation with the data.

Choose geometry and aperture

A d/8 sphere in SCI mode can reduce some gloss and texture influence and is useful for colorant or décor control; SCE is more sensitive to the final surface. Use the largest aperture that fits a representative zone. For fine pattern control, a smaller aperture or imaging system may be needed, but placement uncertainty must be studied.

Finish cannot be reduced to color

Two panels can have close SCI values and still look different because of gloss, emboss depth or direction. Measure those appearance attributes separately when they are specified.

Sample production and ageing

Sample across press position, décor roll, resin or coating batch, board lot and time. Retain location values and range. When evaluating lightfastness or ageing, measure the same conditioned areas before and after exposure and protect an unexposed reference. The ISO 4586 series provides the product framework and relevant tests for high-pressure decorative laminates; use the applicable part for the product grade.
