Measuring Powder-Coated Architectural Products

Link powder, substrate, cure and finish to color data that can be reproduced from coating line to façade supplier.

Technical guideBuilding Materials

Powder-coated architectural color depends on the coating formulation, substrate, pretreatment, film thickness, cure, gloss and texture. Extrusions and formed panels also create orientation and contact challenges. A defensible QC method controls the complete coated system rather than treating the powder name as the color standard.

Define the coated system

Record powder manufacturer and batch, resin and pigment system, substrate alloy or metal, pretreatment, application line, target film build, cure schedule and finish. Use an approved production panel or qualified working standard that represents the real substrate and process. A paper swatch or digital color value cannot replace the coated standard.

Control cure, film build and conditioning

  • Measure after the specified cure and cooling interval.
  • Verify film thickness independently and sample across the part where deposition varies.
  • Keep substrate and pretreatment consistent; they can influence translucent or low-hiding colors.
  • Clean fingerprints and process residue without polishing or changing gloss.
  • Separate reworked, overbaked or undercured material for investigation.

Choose geometry, specular mode and locations

A d/8 sphere in SCI mode generally reduces sensitivity to gloss differences and is useful for closer control of coating color. SCE is more surface-sensitive and may better expose finish variation. Neither mode measures gloss in gloss units. Use a glossmeter when gloss is specified and keep the color geometry fixed.

Measure flat, light-tight areas that fully cover the aperture. On extrusions, name the face and distance from corners, die lines or cut edges. Mark extrusion direction and panel orientation where texture, metallic effect or application direction matters. Effect finishes may require multi-angle measurement rather than an ordinary sphere instrument.

Do not compare unlike surfaces

A smooth master panel and a textured production extrusion can have different SCE and visual appearance even when their underlying coating color is close.

Check architectural production and assemblies

Sample across line time, rack position, extrusion batch, panel coil or fabricator lot. Retain individual values and color direction, not only the mean. For façades, windows and doors, check components that will be adjacent because separate passing parts can still look mismatched if they sit on opposite sides of the standard.

Separate initial color from durability

Initial color conformity, gloss, adhesion and film thickness are different from color retention after weathering. The FGIA released updated AAMA 2603, 2604 and 2605 architectural-aluminium coating documents in 2026; use the project-specified edition and its exact test requirements. Do not infer compliance from a single initial Delta E reading.
