Shade Matching in Textile Production

Use spectral data to move from approved target to stable bulk shade while preserving the visual decision.

Technical guideTextiles

Textile shade matching links a protected master standard to lab development, bulk dyeing, finishing and final roll or garment release. Spectral data makes the workflow faster and more communicable, but it remains reliable only when every stage uses the same defined specimen presentation, optical condition and visual reference.

Establish the standard hierarchy

Approve a master physical standard and store it protected from light, soil, abrasion and uncontrolled handling. Create traceable working standards for daily use and store the master spectrum with instrument conditions. Record fibre, construction, dyeing and finish because a spectral target alone does not describe texture, lustre or fluorescence.

Move from lab dip to bulk deliberately

Stage Control
Lab dip Screen recipe candidates for primary Delta E, spectral shape, metamerism, fibre compatibility and visual appearance.
Pilot or first bulk Quantify scale-up, substrate-lot and machine effects before treating the lab recipe as fixed.
After finishing Measure the stage the customer receives; heat setting, washing, resin, softener and brushing can shift color.
Finished product Check component compatibility, panel direction and specified viewing lights as well as master tolerance.

Control the production run

Verify the instrument and working standard, then sample at defined times, roll lengths and width positions. Preserve individual spectra, L*, a*, b*, total difference and range. Plot the results in production order so a slow drift, side-to-centre bias or sudden correction is visible before the lot is complete.

01

Measure

Use the locked fabric, yarn or fibre presentation and the approved target revision.

02

Diagnose

Review spectral shape and lightness, chroma and hue direction rather than total difference alone.

03

Correct

Change one controlled process or recipe variable and retain the before/after record.

04

Release

Confirm master tolerance, within-roll uniformity, roll compatibility and visual result.

Correct with color direction and strength

A batch that is too light may need strength adjustment, but the cause can also be substrate, liquor ratio, temperature, pH, time, moisture or finishing. A hue error needs different action from a strength error. Use the spectral curve and color-direction data with process knowledge; do not make an automatic recipe correction from total Delta E alone.

Group and release rolls for the real use

Shade grouping or binning should consider distance from the master and compatibility between rolls that may be cut or assembled together. Two rolls on opposite sides of the master can each pass individually yet mismatch in adjacent panels. Define continuity-card, cut-plan or within-group rules and keep direction and pile orientation aligned during visual review.

The average can pass while the roll fails

Retain width and length positions. Edge-to-centre or start-to-end variation is a uniformity problem even when the overall mean sits inside the shade tolerance.
